I love creating paintings from oil. People are the subjects that I like most. To capture the real side of people is very satisfying to me.

Working with watercolors has opened a world of color in everything I see. I paint many things but have found I am drawn to nature and flowers.

Karen’s art form is called Sumi-e (pronounced sue-me-eh), an ancient Asian brush art she has studied with a variety of teachers. “The moment I picked up a brush, and experienced the life of the ink on rice paper – I was hooked!”
While true Sumi-e traditionalists will say the primary colors are black & white, Karen believes the main idea is to capture the spirit or essence of the subject matter. “While I am very respectful to the history of the art, I feel an artist should be of her time. I like to put an American, contemporary twist to my paintings. My idea is Asian art…American heart.”
Karen has studied with teachers from all around the world – from Minnesota to Japan to China, even Australia. All have supported and inspired her journey as an artist. In 2008 & 2009, Karen was selected to participate in the ‘Art in the Sky’ project commissioned by the Rochester Downtown Alliance. Both years, Karen won the popular vote for Best Skyway. Her work has been displayed in galleries throughout Minnesota, including a current display at Dunn Brothers-Elton Hills and a permanent display in the Plummer House ballroom. “I have themed this collection ‘The body moves, but the soul dances’.”
Karen lives in Rochester, MN--happily married to her husband of 20 years. She is a member of the Minnesota Ming Chiao Chapter, National Sumi-e Organization, and Rochester Art Center.

I am thrilled to be able to paint. The object of my painting is light. What light does to the color and form never ceases to fascinate me. It is a privilege to ponder it and attempt to communicate through my paintings. After working with watercolors exclusively for 10+ years, I discovered oils as appealing. I am inspired to progress to be defined as a representational artist of the post impressionism era with an emphasis on visual development.
I am a signature member of MN Watercolor Society and my watercolor paintings were accepted at the Fine Arts Exhibition at the MN State Fair in 2002 and 2008.

I am a 'jack of all trades' when it comes to various art styles and I enjoy learning and trying something new. But at the end of the day my main love is working with glass in mosaic forms and sculpting with wool. Yes, I consider myself to be a wool sculptor and enjoy making anything and everything out of it from wearable hair art, masks to custom made figures. Also, I had the joy of working with the other Goose is Loose! artists here in Rochester and submitted the Mother Earth Goose. Thank you for coming to check out my artwork! Namaste'~!
